Ben Schmand studied psychology and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. Since 1978 he practiced as a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist in several general and psychiatric hospitals. In parallel he held various research positions at the University of Amsterdam, the University of Utrecht, and the Free University in Amsterdam. He obtained a PhD in 1991 at the University of Utrecht under the supervision of professors Betto Deelman and Marten Kuilman.
In 1997 he joined the neurological department of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. In 2003 he was appointed professor of clinical neuropsychology at the University of Amsterdam.
