Annabeth Groenman (1985) is a PhD student at the Radboud University Nijmegen medical centre, department of Cognitive Neuroscience and is currently affiliated to the department of Clinical Neuropsychology of the VU University Amsterdam. As part of the NeuroIMAGE project, her research focuses on substance use and abuse in children and adolescents with ADHD. Her main focus lies on i) the prediction of substance use and abuse in children and adolescents with ADHD using neuropsychological measures and phenotypic measures, ii) the relationship between the use of stimulant medication and substance use and abuse in ADHD, and iii) structural and functional brain differences in ADHD with and without comorbid substance use problems.
Research methods. Neuropsychological assessment (paper & pencil; computerized), questionnaires, diagnostic interviews, functional MRI, structural MRI.
Clinical relevance of the research. Previous studies, mostly from the USA, have shown that children with ADHD are at increased risk for developing Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), however few studies have been performed on this subject in a European sample. The longitudinal character of this study offers an extraordinary chance to make a prediction model for later substance abuse. From a clinical perspective, it would be helpful to classify children with ADHD into several risk groups. This could prove to useful tool in predicting which children might need more monitoring during development.
